Facilities and resources
Our school offers a range of spaces, tools and resources to support student learning. Whether it’s for study, sport, creativity or technology, our learning environments and resources give students what they need to succeed.
Our school facilities
We offer a range of learning environments. They help students stay engaged, build confidence and enjoy every part of their school day. Our facilities may include:
- bright and comfortable classrooms
- a well-stocked library for reading and research
- science labs for hands-on experiments
- sports fields for fitness and fun
- art and music and performances spaces for creative learning
- modern computer lab for digital learning.
At Five Dock Public School, all our classrooms are air-conditioned which has been funded by our Parents and Citizens Association (P and C). Our students and staff have access to a well-resourced library and information centre. Our hall provides us with space to run performing arts activities and assemblies. We have a multi-purpose court as well as spacious grounds for informal play and organised games. Our COLA provides us with space to meet out of the sun and rain as well as an area for outdoor learning.
Resources and technology
Our school uses modern technology and digital learning tools. Our resources help students learn, create and stay connected. As a NSW public school, we have access to shared programs and tools available to all schools in the state.
English
Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.
An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.
The study of English develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.
Mathematics
By studying mathematics, students develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical concepts and their use within the classroom and beyond.
The syllabus consists of the following strands:
- number and algebra
- measurement and geometry
- statistics and probability.
Science and technology
In science and technology, students explore the natural and made worlds. They learn how to apply scientific and technological skills, knowledge and understanding across a broad range of contexts. Science provides a way of inquiring about the world around us. It explores evidence and investigates ways to discover, develop and produce solutions to real world problems. The inquiry and skill-based nature of science opens doors to ideas and discoveries. All classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art interactive whiteboards (IWBs). Our technology centre is fully equipped with latest technology computers. All our classrooms are connected to the internet and children are taught safe guidelines for its use.
Creative arts
In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts where they learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform. Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives. All children participate in music and art activities as part of the curriculum. Dance is offered as part of the sports curriculum. Whole-school performances and art shows are enjoyed by the children and community.
Languages
Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.
Library
The library is an important part of a child’s education. The teacher librarian assists the students to develop information and digital literacy skills, fostering collaboration and a lifelong love of learning. Each class will visit the library once a week to encourage a love of reading and learning. They will participate in a library lesson designed to engage students in literature appreciation, information literacy skills and digital literacy skills.
Students are encouraged to borrow books during their lesson time.

PDHPE
PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.
At FDPS there is weekly sport for all children run by accredited and specialised organisations. This year the program will include athletics, gymnastics and dance. Swimming lessons are offered for Years 1 and 2 in Term 4. Daily fitness activities are run by class teachers.
For years 3 - 6 there is opportunity to participate in PSSA (Public Schools Sporting Association) sport on Fridays. Those children who do not participate in PSSA, participate in a fitness session and rotate through a number of sports in order to develop their games skills.
