Borrowing
All students must have a library bag to carry their books home, as library bags protect our valuable books from the elements, water bottles, and food.
School library bags can be purchased from the school’s uniform shop but any library bag is acceptable.
Borrowing Tips
● When not reading your library books, keep them in your library bag.
● Have a safe place at home to keep your library bag and books so you do not misplace them.
● Have your child organise and pack their library bag the night before their library lesson.
● Return books to the library each week. Remember you can renew them if you have not finished reading them.
● Please notify the teacher librarian, Mrs Davies, of any damaged or lost books.
Borrowing Limits
The following borrowing limits apply to ensure everyone has equitable access to our books:
Stage |
Number of books that can be borrowed |
---|
Kindergarten |
1 book |
Stage 1 - Year 1 & 2 |
2 books |
Stage 2 - Year 3 & 4 |
3 books |
Stage 3 - Year 5 & 6 |
4 books |
Students who would like to borrow more than this should speak to the teacher librarian.
Borrowing is encouraged before school holidays (except Christmas) to allow for recreational reading during the break.
Damaged, Lost and Overdue Books
Students are responsible for the books that they borrow from the library and are taught how to care for these precious resources when in their care.
However, we understand that accidents can happen.
If a book has been lost or damaged whilst in your care please inform Mrs Davies. The school Library Policy states that any books that are lost or damaged beyond repair are to be paid for so they can be replaced. This ensures that library funds can be spent on purchasing new books rather than on replacement costs.
We appreciate your support and trust you understand that if books are repeatedly lost or damaged that borrowing may be suspended for a period of time.
Overdue Books
Overdue notes are printed and sent home in weeks 3, 6 and 9. If you receive one of these notes, please look for the books on the note and return them to the library as soon as possible. Remember it does not need to be your library day to return books.
If your child has not finished reading their book, please bring it to the library to renew or reborrow it. Books can be renewed if no reservations have been placed on the book. This will reduce the number of overdue notices that need to be issued, saving paper and time.
Remember to return books to the library chute. Never leave books outside the library. If the library is not open please hand them into the office.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Our school participates in the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). The PRC encourages students to read widely, developing a love of reading and experiencing quality literature.
At Five Dock Public School, students in kindergarten to year 2 complete the challenge at school with the assistance of their classroom teacher and the teacher librarian. The books read are submitted online by the teacher librarian and all students will receive a certificate at the end of the year.
Students in stage 2 and 3 are encouraged to undertake the PRC independently, allowing them to select the books they wish to read and learning how to log these books online during library lessons. Students can access the PRC website using their Department of Education username and password to log books outside school hours. Only students who submit their online reading record will receive a completion certificate at the end of the year.
If you require any assistance please ask Mrs Davies or visit the PRC website for more information about the challenge, including the rules and challenge dates.
